The Oil Price Crash and the Shifting Energy Landscape

On May 5, over 100 lawyers, policy makers and students joined an engaging discussion on the policy issues and opportunities presented by the recent drop in oil prices. Experts from Columbia University's Law School, Business School and School of International and Public Affairs, all contributed to the informative event, held at Columbia Club in midtown Manhattan.

Debate: The President has exceeded his constitutional authority by waging war without congressional authorization.

In partnership with the Richman Center and the National Constuitution Center, Intelligence Squared presented a debate about the president's constitutional powers at the Miller Theatre on Columbia University's campus. Both sides agreed that the president requires congressional authorization for the war against the Islamic State. They disagreed primarily about whether the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) suffices. The audience was ultimately swayed by arguments made by those against the motion: Columbia Professor Phillip Bobbitt and Yale Professor Akhil Amar. Read more...

Inversions: Implications for Tax Planning, Tax Policy, and Corporate Governance

Hosted by the Millstein Center, the Richard Paul Richman Center for Business, Law and Public Policy, the Charles Evans Gerber Transactional Studies Center and Davis Polk & Wardwell, the conference on "Inversions" took place on Friday, February 27 at the law office of Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP. The half-day event brought together prominent speakers from the financial, public, legal and academic sectors, among others in the governance community, to discuss and evaluate the various impacts of US-based companies relocating their corporate domicile overseas. Co-Directors Awarded Prestigious Grants

Chris Mayer, Paul Milstein Professor of Real Estate Finance and Economics, and co-Director of the Richman Center, was awarded a $257,288 grant by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for Understanding the Market for Reverse Mortgages.

 

Pierre Yared, Associate Professor of Business at Columbia Business School, and co-Director of the Richman Center, is a co-Principal Investigator on a $3,750,000 Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative Grant via the Office of Naval Research via UC San Diego over 5 years.

Case Study and Networking Reception Hosted by Steve Hickey MBA '87 JD '87

On February 12, several JD/MBA students along with a group of Private Equity Fellows, discussed a case study with Advisory Board member, Steve Hickey MBA '87 JD '87, at CVC Capital Partners, where he is a Partner. The event was followed by a networking reception.
